The Effect of Cognitive States on Heart Rate, Blood Pressure and Respiration Rate

Many body functions, including; Blood Pressure (BP), Heart Rate (HR) and Respiration Rate (RSP) are controlled by Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). This part of nervous system can not be controlled voluntarily, but is influenced by external stimuli and cognitive states of an individual. The qualitative changes in these physiological variables (BP, HR and RSP) with respect to change in human cognitive states have been studied using histogram method. The human cognitive states were categorized into five pre-specified states; (1) Motor Action (MA), (2) Thought (TH), (3) Memory Related (MR), (4) Emotion (EM) and (5) Others (OT). The subject thoroughly went through these cognitive states and his/her physiological variables were measured by using BIOPAC System.
